What changes
Mattresses
You buy two Twin XL mattresses. Some brands allow different firmnesses on each side, but matching mattress heights helps the finished bed feel more even.
Power base
Two Twin XL base halves create the King footprint. Ask which functions are truly independent. Some systems independently control the head but synchronize the foot section or certain smart functions.
Sheets
The fitted sheets are usually Twin XL or split-specific. You can still use a single King top sheet, blanket and duvet if you prefer one shared top layer.
The center seam
There will be a gap or seam between the two mattresses. How noticeable it feels depends on edge construction, mattress movement, fitted sheets and whether the sleepers tend to occupy the center.
Who may not need it
If both sleepers are happy moving together, a standard King mattress on a King adjustable base is simpler and usually requires less specialized bedding.
