The finished height formula
Mattress + topper + adjustable base or foundation + frame/platform height = finished sleep-surface height. Measure every layer. Saatva, for example, notes that total bed height depends on the mattress plus any topper and allows adjustable leg settings across multiple heights.
Measure the open cavity, not the outside of the frame
For an adjustable base inside a decorative bed, measure the usable interior width and length between rails. Also measure crossbars, center supports and any hardware that may interfere with the moving base.
Watch for drawers and thick upholstery
Storage drawers can conflict with zero-clearance adjustable bases. Thick upholstered headboards or padded side rails can also reduce usable clearance. Saatva specifically warns that adjustable bases are not compatible with platform beds with drawers and may not work with some heavily upholstered headboards.
Headboard height changes visually
A taller mattress can hide more of the headboard. A low mattress on a tall adjustable base can expose more of the frame or base. Measure the visible headboard area from the expected top of the mattress, not from the floor.
Sheets are part of fit too
Add protector and topper thickness before buying fitted sheets. If the bed articulates, secure elastic and enough pocket depth matter because corners are repeatedly tensioned as the mattress bends.
Doorways and stairs still count
Boxed mattresses help with access before expansion, but adjustable bases and traditional mattresses can be heavy and awkward. Measure the delivery path, tight turns, stair landings, elevator openings and bedroom door.
