Comfort guide

Firmness without the marketing.

“Medium firm” is useful shorthand, not a universal measurement. Two mattresses with the same label can feel very different.

Why firmness feels inconsistent

Firmness depends on comfort-layer thickness, foam density, coil response, quilting, your body weight, sleep position and even the foundation underneath. Brand numbers are not standardized across the industry.

Use three questions instead

How far do I sink?

Deep contour can feel plush even when the underlying support system is strong.

How easy is movement?

Responsive latex or coils can make a mattress feel “firmer” because you stay more on top of the surface.

Where do I feel pressure?

Side sleepers often need more surface pressure relief at shoulders and hips, while stomach sleepers often prefer less sinking through the midsection.

Support is not the same as firmness

A softer mattress can still provide good underlying support, and a very firm mattress can still be a poor match for a person’s body and position. Treat comfort and support as related but separate questions.

Shopping tip: If a brand offers multiple firmness options, compare the company’s descriptions and exchange policy rather than trying to convert every model into one universal 1–10 number.
