Pillow guide

Best pillows for side sleepers: start with loft, not hype.

Side sleepers usually need enough pillow height to fill the space between the shoulder and head, but the correct loft depends on shoulder width, body size, mattress softness and personal preference.

Loft

A broader shoulder gap often calls for more loft, while a softer mattress lets the shoulder sink farther and may reduce the needed pillow height.

Firmness

A pillow can start tall and still collapse too far. Compare how well the fill maintains height under the weight of your head.

Adjustability

Removable or movable fill can be useful when you are unsure of the right loft or when mattress softness changes.

Fill type

Foam, fiber, latex, wool and blends feel different in rebound, temperature and shape retention. No single fill works for everyone.

Temperature

Breathability depends on the fill, cover and room environment. Treat “cooling” as a feature to compare, not a guaranteed result.

Trial and care

Check return terms and whether the cover or pillow itself is washable. Pillows are personal products, so return policies can vary.

Match the pillow to the mattress too

Pillow shopping is easier when the mattress is already chosen. On a firmer mattress, the shoulder may stay higher, increasing the space between the head and mattress. On a softer mattress, the shoulder can sink farther, reducing that space.

If you wake with discomfort, do not assume height alone is the problem. Pillow shape, firmness and how much the fill shifts overnight can all change alignment. Persistent pain should be discussed with an appropriate clinician rather than treated as a product-selection problem.

For couples, remember that the same mattress can create different pillow needs for two people because shoulder width and body size differ. Buying two different pillows is often more sensible than forcing one model on both sleepers.
